"I voted against this proposal which is part of the EU’s 4th Railway Package. The overall aim of the package is to move the sector in the direction of a single, liberalised railway sector.
This proposal, in particular, was concerned with giving additional new tasks to the European Railway Agency so that it would become the only authority responsible for issuing authorisations for the placing on the market of railway vehicles and putting in place track-side control-command and signalling sub-systems.
Given that all of this contributes to the overall aim of doing away with the Commission’s perceived ‘hidden discrimination’ against companies wanting to enter the market, I voted against. I believe that it is for Member States to take decisions on these matters and to retain control over the sector, given the vastly different ways that it is run."@en1
