"In the UK, women make up under 30% of the ICT workforce, which breaks down to around 20% of computing graduates and under 10% of app developers. A recent study conducted by the House of Lords suggests that the lack of women in ICT is drastically holding back the UK from fulfilling its economic potential and that increasing the number of women working in IT could generate an extra GBP 2.6 billion for the UK each year. The UK delegation in Parliament therefore acknowledges that more needs to be done to encourage and include women in ICT careers and we welcome the aims of the Reintke report.
The report does however touch on several areas of concern for the UK delegation: paragraphs which call for progress to be made on the proposed ‘women on boards’ directive; favourable credit conditions for companies in which at least 40% of the workforce are male; references to safeguarding workers’ fundamental rights, collective bargaining and tax and benefits systems. We believe these issues are matters to be dealt with at national level and not at European level. For this reason the UK delegation abstained on the Reinkte report."@en1
