"I voted in favour of this report on domestic workers and care in the EU. It is vital that we work to regularise and professionalise this area. Far too often the lack of recognition of qualifications, particularly in the areas of care for the elderly and vulnerable that require a specific skill set, means that people who are unqualified end up performing this role. It is also impossible and would be highly irresponsible to ignore the incredibly gendered nature of exploitation in this industry. Far too often work in the care and domestic industry is automatically gendered as ‘women’s work’. Furthermore there is a clear international dimension to this with migrant women often being brought over specifically or ending up serving in the domestic and care industry; both of these factors contribute to the lack of regulation/regularisation in this sector and this in turn leads to exploitation of employees and a substandard level of care. This report calls on the Commission and Members States to act to regularise this industry and this is a call that I was happy to back."@en1
