"I voted in favour of this joint resolution which is seeking to condemn the breaches of international humanitarian law which are being carried out globally.
It must not be forgotten that, during the so-called Operation Protection Edge in Gaza in 2014, the Israeli military shelled an intensive care unit of a Palestinian hospital. This is not the first hospital that Israel has destroyed, but the shelling of an intensive care unit is particularly reprehensible as it is attacking the most vulnerable in our society. Israel and others have acted and are acting with impunity for these flagrant breaches of international humanitarian law and violations of the human rights of millions of civilians worldwide.
There needs to be a strong voice coming from the Irish Government condemning the ongoing breaches of international humanitarian law. Without a strong voice from the international community to join in a loud condemnation of these countries belligerent crimes against humanity and gross violations of international law, including Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention prohibiting collective punishment and Article 48 forbidding military actions against civilian populations and infrastructure, then these aggressors will of course, will continue to act with impunity.
