"Mr President, I can’t support all of this package, but I do welcome those bits which will make it easier to do cross-border operations and those which will improve interoperability. I also want to thank my colleague Mr Zīle for the work he’s done on this report, which will reduce costs and delays in getting a new cross-border train model approved. Railways in Europe are still a restricted marketplace, especially in comparison with many other transport sectors. For example, why can’t I get a train directly from Birmingham to Frankfurt? Why does the Eurostar still only go from London to a handful of places in Europe? If we want to improve railways we need to focus on what passengers want. And in the 21st century they want more options, more flexibility and less hassle. Interoperability is key to this. It’s technically possible to have one ticket for your bus, train and plane. We need to make that a reality so customers can be confident the connections can work. This will help not only railways but also regional airports and the transport sector as a whole."@en1
