"Mr President, I knew there were problems in relation to the transport sector and migration, but I did not realise that they were as bad as has been outlined – although the figures presented to us are extremely vague. When you talk about a cost of between EUR 5 and EUR 18 billion, is it EUR 5 billion or is it EUR 18 billion? That is a big difference. I think we should be more accurate in that regard. Nevertheless, this is a very serious issue. I know from speaking to people in Ireland, especially in the haulage area – whose annual dinner I will actually be attending on Saturday night – that they have had huge problems going to the continent, especially at Calais. As the last speaker pointed out, they feel their lives are at risk, and many of the things that have happened are absolutely extraordinary. So we have to move to try and deal with that situation in the interests of our own citizens, who are delivering their goods right across the European Union. To do that, I think the Commission is, in fairness, trying to legalise the migration. Without it being legal, you cannot make progress because, if you have a situation where anything illegal is tolerated, then you have chaos. That has been the situation up until now, and the Commission is trying to deal with it. The only way we can do it is if all Member States cooperate."@en1
