"In the context of the Sustainable Development Goals signed last year at the UN, the global community has put forward an ambitious development agenda for the next 15 years with the intention of eliminating poverty and ensuring that no-one gets left behind. However, there is a gap between the amount of money that is needed in order to ensure this agenda is successful and the amount that the public sector is able to give in the form of development aid. The private sector can and should play a greater role in development in order to help bridge the gap between national development aid and the needs of developing countries. However, the recent Panama papers revelations on the facilitation of tax avoidance practices by EU Member States have shown that there must be protections in place to stop the exploitation of developing countries by foreign investors. Labour MEPs voted to support a report calling on greater investment from the private sector in international development but only if this investment is well regulated and serves development goals, chief amongst which is poverty reduction."@en1
