"I was pleased to support this important report which highlights the fact that one in six Europeans live in poverty, or are at risk of poverty – in Ireland that figure is 16% and 3 out of every 10 children suffer deprivation - stark figures. We are all aware that poorer households spend a higher portion of their incomes on household costs such as food, compared with other more affluent households. The report highlights concrete measures that can be taken in order to try and meet the EU 2020 anti-poverty targets such as a winter heating disconnection moratorium, a possibility to extend the Fund for Aid to the Most Deprived, and measures to reduce energy poverty such as micro-loans to invest in energy efficiency. I also believe that a minimum income which takes into account the economic and social circumstances in each Member State and which is based on a life-cycle approach, can act as a safety net for those families at risk of, or living in, poverty."@en1
