"Turkey represents one of, if not the, most important partners for the EU in the coming years. On migration, energy and security, both north towards Russia and east towards the continuing violence in Syria and northern Iraq, as well as in resolving the frozen conflict in the Caucasus between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Turkey is an important partner, and it is vital to recognise this. That said I would agree with the report’s view on a number of areas relating to human rights. There have been worrying signs that progress has not only stalled but is in danger of going into reverse, in particular with regard to journalistic freedoms. To build our partnership with Turkey further I would hope to see reform looking towards the upholding of fundamental human rights by the Turkish Government. It is important going forward that we work closely with Turkey on the migration crisis while recognising the work that Turkey has already done to help settle refugees as well as in the ongoing struggle against the terrorist group Daesh in Syria. I therefore voted in favour of this report."@en1
