"At a time when austerity is often a key part of national conversations it seemed to me unfair that there should be an increase in the European Parliament budget of 3.9% that was proposed by the Secretary—General of Parliament. There were specific aspects of the report that were positive such as the necessity for security and cybersecurity to be proportionate to the risks. Given the recent attacks in Brussels it is clear that there is a real and present threat to the parliament. I also noted Tarand’s call for increased accountability in the general expenses allowance, which notes the increasing number of MEPs including us in the Labour Party who are publishing their spending records. As public representatives, we have a clear responsibility to use the public’s money correctly and transparently in our work. While I also welcome Tarand’s call for budgetary restraint and the consideration of below 1.7% increases as it is not an overall cut, I felt that I could not in all good conscience back this report at a time when my colleagues in the Welsh Assembly and local Councillors in my area are grappling with massive cuts that have been imposed upon them."@en1
