"Sinn Fein voted against this controversial bill. In essence the provisions contained within this report effectively criminalise whistle-blowers. Whistle-blowers and journalists could be criminalised if they publish information that companies deem to be secret.
As has been noted by a number of NGOs, the Trade Secrets Protection Act would have potentially criminalised the release of the Panama Papers:
This legislation will make it possible for corporations to define any information they do not want released as a trade secret, and then prosecute journalists or whistle-blowers who release it to the public.
This chilling censorship of freedom of expression is one that must be fought at all times. Freedom of expression is one of the essential foundations of any democratic state. My party knows first-hand the dangers of this fundamental freedom being curtailed. Legislation was introduced in order to censor Sinn Féin.
Such draconian measures seek only to undermine democracy.
Freedom of expression is the basic right to communicate and should be respected by all those who value democracy.
This regressive bill was approved by Parliament and so it will now need to be passed into law by national parliaments across the 28 nations of the EU."@en1
