"Madam President, the many threats to our security mean that it is vital that we continue to look into new ways to prevent crime, and we should grasp the opportunities offered to us by the digital age. But people are also concerned about government access to their data and misuse of that access and the impact on their privacy.
This directive strikes the right balance between clear guidelines for law enforcement agencies on the one hand and the importance of protecting people’s privacy on the other. For progressives in the European Parliament, it was key to make sure that this directive goes hand in hand with the one on PNR, which allows us to share flight data, the aim being to ensure that we have more tools to track terrorists without forcing the rest of us to give up our fundamental rights and privacy."@en1
