"Madam President, having been involved as the rapporteur for the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) on this subject from the start of the process four years ago to the final trilogue just before Christmas, it gives me great pleasure to be here today to see us adopting this very important report.
It will, as has been said, set the rules for the new digital age. It ensures that data subjects have control of their data, but we not stifling the digital economy, which is of major importance. We have introduced many concepts, such as the right to be forgotten, the right to erasure, parental control to ensure that the abuse of young people online can be controlled, and, of course, also a concept known as the ‘one-stop shop’, which will be very important for businesses operating in the European Union.
This is a very good day. It shows that, if we cooperate, we can get a good result."@en1
