"Mr President, I welcome this important report on combating poverty. In my home country, three-quarters of a million people are living in poverty. 13% of those are people with jobs, so we need to deal with the issue of decent living wages. Ireland’s rising poverty is coinciding with a severe crisis in housing and homelessness, as a result of government policies. I therefore particularly welcome the report’s acknowledgment that housing is a fundamental right and its call for the expansion of the supply of quality social housing. The relationship between the social housing stock and homelessness is undeniable. We have 6 000 homeless people in Ireland, 1 600 of whom are children. 140 000 people are on social housing lists, yet only 28 social houses were built. Family homes are being repossessed while rental tenants are pushed across the poverty threshold because of skyrocketing rents. We need to see housing as a right. I also welcome this report’s call for a moratorium on winter heating cut-offs. We also need real action on the crisis of poverty."@en1
