"Madam President, the other issue that nobody speaks about in this Chamber, with the possibility of eventual Turkish EU membership, is the shift in the dynamics of the politics of this Chamber. Were Turkey to join the European Union, with a population of, say, 77 million – if we take the estimates and start in the middle – they would have the largest number of MEPs. The existing Member States would have even less representation.
Is that not another reason why Turkey should be kept out of the European Union? Because the main players – and indeed the smaller players – within the European Union would have even less democratic ability to represent their citizens."@en1
