"In Central Asia the EU faces multiple issues, the European Union has strong and increasing political, strategic and economic interests in the area and it is important that we use our shared values to help build these links to improve on the ties already established with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
However, as this report stresses, we also have lingering concerns over the issue of potential human rights abuses in this country. I am happy to back this report because it stresses that respect for human rights and democracy must be at the core of the EU strategy in this area. These are not pawns to be swapped for material gain. As an area where multiple outside players are taking an interest, both through improving transit links and the sale of natural resources, it is important that we all play a constructive role in bringing about improvements for the people of the region."@en1
