"I thank my Socialist and Democratic colleagues for inserting into this report the important call to include a gender perspective in security, defence, and global governance policies. A perspective on gender equality is often pushed out by chauvinist ‘realpolitik’, and women are often under-represented. The European Union must strive to put peace, human rights, sustainability and social justice at the heart of our developing global governance systems.
I regret that the European Parliament has so far failed to take a stand on the important issue of nuclear non-proliferation, arms reduction and multilateral disarmament, since the last NPT Conference in 2015. The EU must seek to engage and advance the ongoing UN initiative on multilateral nuclear disarmament, and the European Parliament must provide the Union’s representatives with a mandate to do so."@en1
