"Defence policy is matter of national sovereignty. While cooperation is important, the EU cannot and should not be allowed to expand its role in this area. In the UK, the NATO alliance is the bedrock of British defence policy and a leading instrument of our national security. Close cooperation with NATO is also seen as vital in fulfilling UK strategic objectives as well as shared security and defence challenges. To call for a stronger EU role within the realm of security and defence is not only an infringement of national sovereignty, but it is also a threat to the UK’s security framework. Of course cooperation is vital. In today’s environment, security threats are increasingly transnational in nature. Indeed, threats such as terrorism and organised crime do not respect state boundaries and require coordinated responses. Such coordination should however be left to the Member States and national governments. Not an increasingly centralised EU. NATO is also a vital cornerstone of Europe’s security policy and so any attempt to sidestep this organisation will be counterproductive and damaging to European security more broadly. It is for these reasons that I voted against."@en1
