"Despite the vague name of the report ‘The EU in a changing global environment - a more connected, contested and complex’ the report itself is essentially calling for increased harmonisation, synergy, development and investment for EU military capabilities, and a closer relationship with NATO.
We voted against the report as a whole as we reject the militarisation of the EU, and the erosion of Irish neutrality which is essentially what this report is calling for.
Sinn Féin has long advocated a policy of active neutrality, rejecting participation in any military alliance and supporting an enhanced role for the United Nations in resolving conflicts around the world. Sinn Féin has consistently called for a greater focus on solving the causes of conflict, such as political and economic inequality and instability and the absence of democracy. Our own experience of conflict and conflict resolution has taught us that the path to peace is not to be found in increasing military capabilities but in dialogue, inclusivity and equality.
My party in Europe will continue to focus on these issues in addition to ensuring that vital public funding is not being diverted to propping up military actions outside of the European Union. I call on all other Irish MEPs to commit likewise."@en1
