"Mr President, I welcome Commissioner Hill’s proposals today building on the work that is being done at OECD level and the base erosion and profit shifting (BEPS) movements there, going of course one step further in ensuring that there is public disclosure of tax paid by multinationals and which countries it is paid in within the EU. It is very important in terms of transparency. I welcome and would agree with your comments, Commissioner, also when you say you are pro-business. I would be pro-business also because I think business is important, whether they be multinationals, SMEs or micro-enterprises, because businesses employ people and they do provide very valuable employment. Indeed many SMEs also depend on the existence of multinationals in the supply chain and also provide services to the employees there. So there is a symbiotic relationship that needs to be recognised. Nonetheless, if the figures are that the tax authorities across the EU are losing EUR 50 to 70 billion a year, I think it is time that action was taken to ensure that multinationals pay taxes in the jurisdiction in which they make their profit."@en1
