"I supported this report as did the vast majority of my colleagues in Parliament. I believe that the CFP has a vital role to play in trying to influence and protect Europe’s high environmental and labour standards in external waters. In fact, it is my opinion that the strength of the EU is its normalising influence on others to introduce better standards in all sectors. When the CFP was established, there were relatively few distant water fishing nations, operating a long way from their own coastal waters. Now, three decades later, the situation has changed radically and there is intense competition in all ocean areas. This has its own problems for the environment and fishing stocks as well as workers’ rights. Thankfully this report highlights the importance of the EU distant fleet activity in protecting our interests and at the same time addresses the shortcomings that still need to be tackled. It calls for stricter inspections to ensure EU standards are maintained, greater traceability of products that enter the food supply chain and the need for distant fleets to only fish surplus stocks among others."@en1
