"In line with the UK government, I welcome and subsequently support the development of Vocational and Educational Training (VET) as well as the Erasmus+ programme. As examples of EU-level culture and education programmes, both offer a good degree of EU added value and consequently offer significant benefits for UK citizens. Indeed, such programmes help to ensure people have the skills both they, and our economy, need in order to grow. Unfortunately however, a number of less favourable proposals were adopted during the committee stage. Not only do these proposals risk increased spending and red tape for Member States, but they also seek to promote a ‘stronger European identity’ and are overly prescriptive in respect of Member State education systems. As a firm supporter of the principle of subsidiarity, such attempted competence creep is unacceptable and as a result, limited the extent to which I could support this report. The UK must remain in the position whereby it can develop its own systems to reflect the needs of its citizens. It is the UK, and not the EU, that is in the best position to make decisions on such matters. It is for these reasons that I abstained."@en1
