"UKIP voted against the Karim Report today. As a matter of principle we cannot support a report which endorses the current legislative system under the Treaties. UKIP is opposed to any system which gives the EU the right to impose legislation on the UK and of any concomitant system of giving national parliaments permission to legislate on some issues, a system which is the very negation of Parliamentary sovereignty. ‘Subsidiarity and proportionality’ are weasel words intended to convey the sense that the EU is not a monolithic, all-pervading entity and that the ability of Member States to legislate has somehow been left intact by the Treaties. In reality the concept makes no difference whatsoever to the nature and extent of the ‘competences’ of the EU and the vast areas of policy over which the EU an effective monopoly in its ability to legislate. The EU’s power of legislation remains intact."@en1
