"I voted in favour of the report which gives key recommendations to the Commission as well as Member States to ensure a compassionate and organised response to the biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War. The refugee crisis has shown that the current EU approach to migration is not sustainable. We need to have a complete rethink in order to create a system that is fit for the 21st Century. This report outlines the European Parliament's vision of what that could look like. Europe urgently needs to take a global approach to migration based on the principle of solidarity. Member States urgently need to uphold their responsibilities and show solidarity with countries on the periphery, such as Greece and Italy, by offering humanitarian assistance, quickly implementing the relocation agreement and working together to enhance safer and legal routes to Europe. We also need to ensure that the voices of migrants and refugees are heard and in that respect I was pleased to attend the recent parliamentary screening of Jakob Brossman’s award-winning film ‘Lampedusa in Winter’."@en1
