"It is universally acknowledged that at the moment we face the biggest refugee crisis in Europe since the end of the Second World War. The seemingly unending bloodshed in Syria, as well as global issues of poverty and climate change have brought us face-to-face with a very real challenge. We cannot afford to sit idly by and ignore this problem. I therefore voted in favour of this report, for reasons that I will outline below. This is not just a European problem, this is a global problem but one that can have a European solution if we have the courage to act on the impeccably Labour principle of solidarity, solidarity between people and solidarity between countries. Member States urgently need to uphold their responsibilities and show solidarity with countries on the periphery such as Greece and Italy by offering humanitarian assistance and quickly implementing the relocation agreement as well as working together to enhance safer and legal routes to Europe. If the only routes into Europe are the illegal ones, then people will take them in ever greater numbers. We cannot morally afford to see more drowned children, or leave peripheral Member States with a burden that they cannot hope to shoulder alone."@en1
