"The European Union zootechnical legislation is aimed at facilitating intra-EU free trade for the breeding of animals and their genetic material. The Commission’s proposal to consolidate these texts has been expanded to produce a synchronised structure of animal breeding which will affect animal genetics in Europe. Local breeds must not be put at risk in an attempt to improve competitiveness by exporting major European breeds internationally. Animal breeding will now be required to meet certain criteria to receive recognition from the competent authority. This approach will enable European breeds to be structured efficiently on the global market."@en1
