"In waters outside of national jurisdictions, or the ‘high seas,’ the United Nations (UN) is responsible for environmental sustainability and conservation through two international agreements, one of which – the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) – is an international, legally-binding framework. The European Parliament own initiative report which was voted on in plenary reacts positively to the UNCLOS and welcomes this framework as a means to address the challenges of protecting the ecosystems of the high seas. Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, mineral exploitation and energy drilling, and pollution and marine litter are all damaging marine habitats and ecosystems. The EU has an important position in securing the sustainable management of marine resources in the high seas. This is reflected in the report’s call for the Commission to work closely with interested parties and support the UNCLOS framework. I voted in favour of this report as I hope that demonstrating support for the UNCLOS will help find international solutions for this environmental degradation and demonstrate the EU’s commitment to global environmental issues."@en1
