"I voted in favour of this report. This was a non-controversial file, where all of the MEPs voted in favour of this report in the committee. The background of the report is based on recommendations made to the UN General Assembly in 2015 regarding the creation of a legally-binding instrument which would come under the auspices of the ‘United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea’ which seeks to promote the conservation of marine biodiversity and sustainable usage of marine resources, it also acknowledges the negative impact that the rapid growth and expansion of marine activities (industrial fishing, marine drilling, shipping, etc.) on the marine environment across the globe. Two important provisions were contained within the report: 1. 64% of the sea consists of areas beyond national jurisdiction. These unchartered waters should be have stronger legal protections under international law 2. Inclusion of measures which should insure accountability for parties participating in marine activities. Therefore, on the grounds outlined above, I voted in favour."@en1
