"If the only certainties in life are death and taxes, it is possible taxes is the less popular of the two. Yet tax is the glue that holds countries together. We need to continue to make tax requirements as simple as possible to encourage new and small businesses to flourish, it is important to make sure that businesses are clear on what they have to pay and how this will affect their prices. Yet, this document also recognises that there needs to be a review of the greater flexibility that could be granted to member states in this area. We hope this procedure will allow members to adopt new rules, for instance on sanitary products. Labour MEPs will engage fully with the Commission's forthcoming review of VAT legislation to make sure that any new VAT regime reflects our values and priorities, this directive does not represent an end, but a beginning. Tax is one of the key tools that we have to ensure that Labour values and priorities are upheld, while equally ensuring that small companies and new businesses have a very clear route set before them on tax."@en1
