"Mr President, one of the causes of the crisis in agriculture is the growing gap between the urban and the rural – the growing gap between the consumer and the farmer. How have we ended up with a situation where some farmers in the European Union are being paid below the cost of production? It simply is not fair. Twenty years ago I and others worked to tackle unfair trade treatment of farmers in the developing world, resulting in the Fairtrade mark. We now have lots of products from the developing world where the farmer has been paid a fair price: tea, coffee, bananas and cocoa. We now need to do the same for European farmers. Twenty to thirty per cent of EU customers are willing to pay a fair price to their farmers; that is a big market. A fair price scheme for EU farmers will be difficult to set up, but where there’s a will there’s a way, and our farmers deserve no less."@en1
