"Mr President, I want to thank the Chair of the Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development for this debate here this morning, and thank the Commissioner for his comments. Clearly this crisis in the agriculture sector is much deeper and more prolonged than the Commission had forecast or than we would desire, so it is important that we hear from Members, particularly what is happening in each Member State, because of our differences. But there is one clear message, and I am not sure whether many farmers are listening to the debate here in the Chamber – hands up if you are – but that is that the voice of farmers is, I think, not being heard loud and clear, because there are fewer of them. Consumers – and we are all consumers in this Chamber – are benefiting to some extent from the crisis in the agricultural sector with cheaper food, but perhaps others along the supply chain are benefiting much more. So on question 3, could the Commissioner say a bit more about what the Commission is going to do on unfair trading practices in the food supply chain? I hope it is going to do something concrete and effective. Can I also, Commissioner, say that implementing the measures that you have brought forward is important, but measuring their impact is even more important? And can I ask you a question on Article 222? Following on from Mr Dantin’s comments, do you really think that it can be effective if only one or two Member States apply voluntary production cuts, and can you explain how that will and can be funded? My last point relates to costs. We need to do something to tackle the high cost of production in European – including Irish – agriculture."@en1
