"Mr President, in the long term the future for agriculture is positive – not an easy message for farmers going through the most difficult times in living memory. I know Commissioner Hogan understands that well. I know that he will do everything within his powers to help this industry through very tough times. I also know that, relative to the depths of the farm income crisis, those powers are limited. But what he can and must do is find ways to help the industry become more productive, more competitive and more sustainable. Agriculture needs R&D, innovation and simplification, and above all agriculture needs regulation based on common sense and proven science, not on emotion. The Commissioner and the farmers understand that well. Unfortunately, too many Members of this House do not."@en1
