"After the financial crisis in 2008, one of the key achievements was the move towards a Banking Union. It was designed to ensure the resilience and safety of the banking and financial sectors, as well as – crucially – to restore confidence and investment in the real economy and highlight the high level of protection which citizens need from the failure of banks/financial firms. I have supported the steps that have been undertaken to achieve these measures, but I cannot consider the Banking Union complete. It lacks some key elements, such as a common deposit insurance scheme.
In conclusion, this report has analysed the current situation of the Banking Union and raised priorities for where it should go from here. Hence, I voted in favour of this report and thank my colleague Roberto Gualtieri for the effort and work that he put into writing it."@en1
