"I, along with my group, fully supported the Annual Report on the Banking Union. This report, which follows up on the implementation and evolution of financial supervision in the EU, the so-called Banking Union, is paramount to monitor the harmonisation of supervisory tools at EU level. This will help to ensure that the financial crisis of 2008 will not be replicated by strengthening capital requirements and depositor protection and ultimately establishing a Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) and a Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM) for the euro area. I was happy to support the regulatory induced process of increasing banks’ capital and reducing leverage, but I was also glad that the report pointed to the possible negative effects this may have on lending. Concerning the SRM, thankfully the report called for the rapid drawing-up of banks’ resolution plans and minimum requirements for assets to be bailed-in (so-called MREL, Minimum Requirements for Eligible Liabilities) in a possible bank resolution to shield against negative effects on the real economy."@en1
