"I would like to use this opportunity to raise the issue of the situation of women in Eritrea, and how European authorities treat women refugees. This is especially important in the context of the report on women refugees that Parliament adopted this week.
Eritrea has ratified all major human rights conventions, including the Convention for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and yet has one of the most appalling human rights records on Earth.
The majority of Eritrean women are subject to female genital mutilation (FGM), and refugees from that country are likely to have experienced FGM. European authorities receiving Eritrean refugees on our borders and across Member States must be trained and equipped to deal with those who have undergone FGM, in terms of healthcare and psychological support, as well as taking into account FGM (and the complexity of dealing with it) in asylum requests."@en1
