"The humanitarian situation in Eritrea has become a growing concern for the European Union. The EU has a vested interest in a stabilised Eritrea and does not wish to see the population of the region suffer any further. A sizeable proportion of the Eritrean population has fled as a result of actions of the Eritrean Government in its active disregard for human rights or due to the lack of protection it has provided to its citizens. It is imperative that the Eritrean Government implement as many measures as possible to guarantee the basic human rights of its citizens. Particularly worrying are reports which claim that the government commits widespread extrajudicial killing, torture, arbitrary detention and discrimination. With all this in mind, and considering the vast protection provided by several international human rights instruments such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, I support the European Parliament’s motion for a resolution on the situation in Eritrea."@en1
