"I supported the resolution ‘towards a thriving data-driven economy’. The Commission’s 2014 strategy on big data supports the transition towards a data-driven economy in Europe, which will be core to the Digital Single Market, and aims to stimulate research and innovation on data, leading to more business opportunities and an increased availability of knowledge and capital – in particular for SMEs – across Europe. The big data market has huge potential with an expected growth rate up to 2017 that is six times faster than in the overall ICT market, possibly 3.75 million new jobs by 2017 and 1.9 % in additional GDP growth by 2020. This rapidly growing sector will need advanced, digitally skilled workers, an area in which the EU workforce is currently lacking. Education and training will therefore be crucial. Also hugely important will be improved investment in broadband services, particularly in rural areas, so that all EU regions and citizens can benefit from this burgeoning sector. That is why I supported the amendment calling for improved support and incentives for cooperative and municipal investments in broadband infrastructure, which will also facilitate broadband coverage in rural areas."@en1
