"Madam President, I strongly condemn the atrocious killing of Giulio Regeni and express my solidarity with the relatives of the victim. We need an independent, credible investigation into his death.
Sadly the case of Giulio follows a long list, running into hundreds, of enforced disappearances that have occurred in Egypt since the military takeover. We demand justice for Giulio and his family; we also demand justice for the number of Egyptians who continue to suffer a similar fate on a daily basis. The security forces and the judiciary have failed to hold officers to account in cases where citizens have been tortured to death, or which involved excessive use of force.
The Egyptian authorities urgently need to repeal the repressive protest law and all other repressive legislations that are being used for internal repression under the pretext of security of the state. We need to take all the necessary steps to ensure the Egyptian Government does carry out these reforms in order to maintain peace and stability in Egypt."@en1
