"Mr President, I would like to thank Mr Gualtieri for his report. I just want to make three brief points to the Commissioner. Banking Union is crucial for jobs and growth, especially across the eurozone. We need to have a strong Banking Union. Where we need to retrofit the project and improve the project, we should do that. I also believe that the Commission is right to now initiate a review. Where changes need to occur, we should be honest enough to admit those changes need to occur. I do not think we should do it in a partisan way.
We have had to do this very quickly. It has been an extraordinary project – the mandate of the previous Parliament – but we should always be prepared to change what we have if it is not working. My final remark is this, Commissioner: it is all about the lending environment. We see too many banks still not in a position to lend to SME growth and development across Europe and across the eurozone especially. It is important that we keep capital reserves, that the new architecture on SSM is correct, and that the new stress tests are right, but we have to make sure that the final high street banks actually start delivering real growth to the European economy. Otherwise, we are not going to see progress."@en1
