"Mr President, a long, long time ago in a distant age before man landed on the moon, before the internet and mobile phones, even before the Eurovision Song Contest, there was an idea of a new country rising out of Europe, a new empire – the United States of Europe. In that new empire there would be a need for a new currency and also a new bank – the European Central Bank. That bank would improve the productivity, the employment chances, the opportunities for European citizens. We will move ourselves forward to today. We have unemployment averaging 11%, youth unemployment in many countries over 30%, productivity down, GDP down. Today the world has moved on, but the European Union and its ideas have not. They are stuck in the past. There are very talented people and it is very sad. There are very talented people like Commissioner Hill, who are trying to complete an old idea from an old past into the modern world. All of which should give us one solution. Think of those countries outside the euro area that are prospering. There are ideas better than the one that you already have today."@en1
