"Mr President, I echo my colleagues’ concerns on the Zika virus and the EU must support the scientific research to conclusively establish the link between the Zika virus and microcephaly, but we must also be cognisant, as has been said earlier, of the fact that simply telling women to delay pregnancy is not good enough.
Many of these countries deny women access to information on their reproductive rights and concrete steps must be taken so that women have the information, support and services they require to exercise their right to determine whether and when they become pregnant. As the UN Human Rights Chief said: ‘in situations where sexual violence is rampant and sexual and reproductive health services are criminalised, efforts to halt this crisis will not be enhanced by placing the focus on advising women and girls not to become pregnant.’
So while I welcome the EU funding of EUR 10 million, I believe we must also proactively support those organisations which are trying to help women in these regions."@en1
