"Mr President, for the thalidomide survivors, like my constituent Lizzy – the important point she made to me was that as survivors age, their health problems and care needs become more complex. She wants to live independently, as long as possible, and make choices in her life, choices which the rest of us take for granted. These choices allowing you to live in your own home for as long as possible could be as simple as adapting a bathroom, or changing a kitchen. What they are asking for is not huge but is something the German Government could practically help with as these 6 000 surviving victims age and enter a new period in their lives: a period where they should have a quality of life and live with dignity. Their asking tonight for the German Government to help those remaining survivors across the EU is important. I am pleased to see how this issue unifies us across Parliament and so it should. We will all continue to campaign on this subject and I am pleased that this is the start of this campaign being heard; not in the corridors and the offices but on the floor of this House where it belongs."@en1
