"Mr President, Eritrea is a country that faces many challenges. Political instability, human rights abuses and forced conscription have led to a humanitarian crisis. Eritrea is a major source of people in the ongoing migration crisis, with tens of thousands making the perilous journey to Europe. With Somalia, Eritrea and the Sudan on its borders, Ethiopia’s role in providing for security in the Horn of Africa must not be overlooked. Over 130 000 refugees from Eritrea are hosted by Ethiopia and credit must be given for the leading military role that Ethiopia plays in the fight against al-Shabaab. Mr President, more must be done to address the political and economic drivers for the migration crisis originating in Eritrea and, as in the Middle East, it is only through close partnership with regional powers and support for people close to home that we can address this issue quickly and in the best possible way, both for people in the north of Africa and the Middle East and for those here in Europe."@en1
