"Here, yet again, is an example of the EU being able to tackle a serious public health issue in a manner that Member States cannot undertake alone. The tobacco industries’ attempts to foil the Tobacco Products Directive were ferocious; we have seen PMI’s aggressive strategies of intimidation, and law-suits against governments all around the world who try to regulate tobacco products. The Directive was adopted in 2014 much due to the tenacious and determined work of Labour MEPs.
European national governments would most likely not have been able to stand strong in the face of mass lobbying from a large industry, and this demonstrates the collective strength of EU legislators.
I welcome the EU signing up to the WHO programme to tackle illicit trade in tobacco products, and support my S&D colleagues in their work on this important public health and public interest issue."@en1
