"Unfortunately, I cannot support the PMI agreement renewal in its current form. The agreement was supposed to reduce significantly counterfeit tobacco product smuggling, but it did not achieve this. Instead the agreement seems to have benefited Philip Morris International (PMI), insofar that there was an reduction in the amount of counterfeit PMI products sold, but the trade of illicit tobacco products overall has not reduced.
We need to get up and running a framework for tracking and tracing tobacco products in order to bring down this kind of activity, for which the tobacco products directive provides.
The Tories, meanwhile, have clearly shown where their allegiances lie: with the big corporations and not the interest of the public."@en1
