"I voted in favour of this report. The current provisions date back to 2003 and were in need of revision. I welcome the fact that impact assessments will take social and environmental – as well as economic – factors into account. Other good aspects include the commitment to enhanced transparency in the law-making process.
The institutions calling on Member States to ‘clearly communicate’ to their public when implementing EU measures is valuable. In light of the UK referendum the benefits of EU membership do need to be articulated. People need to see us in this Parliament acting in their interest.
The onus is on national capitals to keep people abreast of developments at European level. There are, of course, other factors – such as how much of what we discuss in this place will get reported and in what way. This we cannot control.
Nonetheless, this agreement goes some way to allaying concerns about bureaucracy. It represents a step in the right direction if people can be better aware that this Parliament is on the side of citizens from Birmingham to Bucharest."@en1
