"Mr President, I would say to the Minister: another week, another summit, and yet we are no closer to solving the refugee crisis. A long-term strategy is way overdue. Instead of addressing the problems that Greece and other frontline States are facing with the inflows, we have outsourced the problem to Turkey. My real concern is the price we are paying not in euros, but in compromising our values for the sake of political expediency. What is worse is that we are turning a blind eye to the near-total crackdown on freedom of expression and the media by the Turkish authorities; and we cannot ignore the fact that the Turkish army is engaging in collective punishment of the local population in south-east Turkey.
A ceasefire between the PKK and the army needs to be put in place immediately. Offering visa-free travel and speeding up accession negotiations as bargaining chips will do irreparable damage to our credibility and clout on the world stage – the credibility that has allowed the EU to make huge strides in spreading stability and rule of law in our neighbourhood."@en1
