"Madam President, the Commission’s press release on the European social pillar originally described it as a reference document of a legal nature expressing key principles of the EU – but it is not going to apply in nine of the 28 Member States. That seems a bit odd: big important principles, but not going to apply to hundreds of millions of citizens. I have to say to the Commissioner: it is lucky that you and President Juncker were not writing Exodus and Deuteronomy otherwise we might have had ‘thou shalt not kill, but you can in the United Kingdom’ and ‘thou shalt not steal, although the Swedes will have to opt into this’ and ‘thou shalt not commit adultery, but it is fine in Poland or, rather, optional in Poland’. Surely if this is important, then it should apply to everybody. Or if it is just a bit of blarney, a bit of soft soap to keep socialists happy while nothing actually changes, then in that case, let us not, any of us, bother wasting our time on it. If it is a real thing, by the way, then, at some point in the document, it should have made mention of quality jobs. There are 80 000 people in my constituency in the West Midlands on zero-hour contracts and similar exploitation. If this document means something then it should apply to us and it should talk about that."@en1
