"Madam President, I must admit that when we began to hear about the social triple—A some of us began to think: at last, here is something a bit more aspirational on social Europe. I really hope that we are also going to draw on the work that we have done in the past on issues beyond GDP, because I think that picks up on some of the points that were made about quite how we are really looking at this. As others have said, we certainly feel that social Europe has been very much under attack over the last few years. This Parliament has been extremely clear on that, as you will remember, and we recognise that if you cut too much you actually kill the plant that you were trying to grow. So, in terms of the social pillar, I, like you, really hope that there will be many, many responses to that consultation, not least from those experiencing poverty. I hope that part of the concentration in this is going to be about how we tackle growing inequalities, because they are there within our labour market, which we see hollowing out. They are there in terms of job opportunities, and we certainly do face a number of challenges. I would hope that all Member States will engage constructively in this, but I am British so I do not take that for granted. I think we are looking, however, at an issue of enforcement. When we are looking at future legislation, as others have said, we are looking at a core Europe and the ‘other’ Europe as well. So if we are looking at the extension of the Equalities Directive, the Carer’s Leave Directive, these sorts of things, I think we are faced with an issue here, if we really are looking at a one-speed Europe."@en1
