"Mr President, we have just been speaking about better law-making in this Parliament. I have to say that this is not a good example. It is the opposite of better law-making. I think it is a really bad idea to reopen this file while we are still waiting for the implementation of the enforcement directive in the Member States. I know that this is a targeted revision but it is still not something I welcome. With regard to the detail, the principle of remuneration for the protection of workers is very much wider than the original directive, which refers to pay. This is likely to have an adverse impact on smaller businesses, on our SMEs, and while the proposal is not directly referring to equal pay for equal work in the same place, I suspect that this is an attempt by the Commission to push ahead with that ambition. We must be very careful that we do not create another law with unintended consequences."@en1
